Himachal PCS Prelims Exam consist of two papers based on objective type multiple choice questions. Paper I (General Studies) and Paper II (Aptitude Test) both will have 100 questions and will be of 200 marks. The duration for Paper I and Paper II will be 2 hours each.
Negative Marking: For each question for which a wrong answer has been chosen by the candidate, one third of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty.
Syllabus for Paper-I General Studies
History, geography, political, art & culture and socioeconomic development of Himachal Pradesh.
Currents events of national and international importance.
History of India and Indian national movement.
Indian and World Geography- physical, social, economic geography of India and the world.
Indian polity and governance – Constitution, political system, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy,
Economic and social development– sustainable development poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives, etc.
General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and climate Change–that do not require subject specialization.
Syllabus for Paper-II Aptitude Test
Interpersonal skills including communication skills
Logical reasoning and analytical ability
Decision making and problem solving
General mental ability
Basic numeracy : numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc. (Class X level), Data interpretation : charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc (Class X level)
English Language comprehension skills (Class X level)

Viva-Voce: After clearing mains exams the candidate appears in interview for final seection
Durations of the Exam: All the papers are of three hours duration.
The candidate shall have the option to answer the papers of General Knowledge and three optional subjects either in English or in Hindi medium but no candidate is permitted to answer any of their papers partly in Hindi and partly in English.
